Tiger mom Cúc aspires to the perfect traditional Vietnamese family. But when her daughter Mai develops psychological issues and her son Quang comes out as gay, the dream shatters. The unexpected arrival of Mai’s baby upsets the family’s fragile balance and prompts Quang to create a time capsule – the film itself.
He documents the family’s journey towards a new cycle of motherhood, while opening a door to the past. The trio looks back over diaries and family photographs in an attempt to mend their broken bonds.
In his first feature film, Nông Nhật Quang draws on all his courage, talent and queerness in his effort to piece the family mosaic back together, untangling the knots created by years of silence. It is through each of their precious archives, and by unsettling the established order, that he gradually comes to understand what lives within those closest to him.
Perhaps, in so doing, they will come to accept one another and build a loving home, so that baby Guava can love and be loved as they themselves so yearned to be?
